Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Hiking Holidays Ireland?
We are a locally based company operating hiking tours in North West Ireland. We’ve lived here all of our lives, and know this part of Ireland intimately. We know every trail, every hidden gem, and every spectacular viewpoint. We have an excellent relationship with the people who run the Bed and Breakfasts and small hotels, along with all the others who are so vital in making your hiking holiday your best ever.
County Donegal and the wider North West of Ireland is one of the most stunningly beautiful parts of Ireland, but it’s also the least discovered. By hiking with us you are helping to support local economies in the regions where our tours are located.
How does a self-guided hiking holiday work?
In a Hiking Holidays Ireland self-guided tour, you (or you together with another person or persons) will be provided with detailed route notes, a mobile app with GPS routes, and a comprehensive guide booklet.
On the evening of your arrival (or morning of your first hike) we meet you for an orientation. We explain how the directions, mobile app, etc. work and answer any questions you have.
You then follow the routes as outlined at your own pace. Your bed and breakfast accommodation is included in the tour price. For multi-centre tours, when you arrive at your next destination, your luggage will be there waiting for you.
The advantage of a self-guided hiking tour is the degree of independence that it allows. You are not forced to hike with a group, so the pace you go at is totally up to you. Although you will be hiking independently, 24-hour emergency support is provided.
What is the best time of year for a hiking holiday in Ireland?
Our hiking tours run from March to September. The weather in Ireland is changeable year-round, but this period offers the longest days and generally the best conditions. May, June and September tend to be drier months, while July and August are peak season with longer daylight hours.
Regardless of when you visit, you should always be prepared for rain and changing conditions in the mountains.
What level of fitness do I need?
Our tours are suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. The distances vary from moderate to longer (typically 10-15 km per day). However, it’s important to note that the routes are very hilly and the underfoot conditions can vary greatly. You should be comfortable with hiking in steep terrain and on sometimes rough or wet ground.
What should I bring?
Essential items include:
- Waterproof hiking boots (broken in before your trip)
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Layered clothing (weather can change quickly)
- Day pack for carrying essentials
- Water bottle
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
- Smartphone for the route app
What are the accommodation options?
We use carefully selected Bed and Breakfasts and small guesthouses. All are family-run establishments where you’ll receive a warm Irish welcome. Rooms have private bathrooms, and hosts are experienced in catering for hikers’ needs, including early breakfasts and packed lunches where required.
How do I get to the start of the tour?
Our tours are based in County Donegal, which is easily accessible from Dublin Airport. Regular direct buses connect Dublin Airport and City with Donegal Town, and local buses connect to our tour locations. We provide detailed travel information when you book.
Can I do the tours solo?
Yes! Many of our guests travel solo. A solo traveller supplement applies to cover the additional accommodation costs, but you’ll have the freedom to hike at your own pace with full support from our team.
What about meals?
Breakfast is included each morning. For lunches, you can pick up supplies in local shops or ask your accommodation host about packed lunch options. There are excellent restaurants and pubs in all our overnight locations for evening meals.
